March 2010

By region, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) was the most active hotel investment market in 2009, recording more than $4.3 billion in hotel sales, followed by Asia Pacific at $3.3 billion and the Americas at just over $2.2 billion. Building on the increased level of activity in the second half of 2009, the outlook for 2010 is positive with a continued, albeit moderate, recovery in transaction volumes.

Year-end global update
March 2009

The global hotel transactions market posted a decline of 80% over 2007 levels to $24.2 billion in 2008. While still higher than the decade low of $10 billion in 2002, the year 2008 saw progressively larger declines in transaction volumes with every successive quarter. By region, the largest drop was recorded in the Americas (-80%), followed by Asia Pacific (-77%), and EMEA (-60%). Hotel transaction activity is expected to gather pace in the second half of 2009.

Mid-year global update
August 2008

Following five years of consecutive growth, figures from Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels’ research show that the global hotel transactions market has posted a decline of 76% for the first half of 2008. Nevertheless, this still indicates $14.7 billion worth of hotel transactions closed in a year thus far marked by challenging economic conditions, illiquid debt markets, and uncertain trading outlooks. This report analyzes investment volumes by region and provides an outlook for the second half of 2008.
